Enoch Foote was born on May 2, 1770, the son of John Foote and Deborah Hoyt. In 1791, he married Abigail Brooks, a widow; they had four children: Elanson, Charles, Mary Ann, and Peter. Before and during the War of 1812, Foote was an officer in the Connecticut Militia, and at one time presided over the 4th Cavalry Regiment.
